GenSpace + LACMA Partnership – Connecting Older Adults to LA’s Art & Culture

August 8, 2024
Partnerships are central to GenSpace’s mission to provide our members with a welcoming space where they can explore their creativity and gain exposure to the LA community’s rich cultural experiences.  The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) was a natural fit to help us fulfill this goal while connecting members with the museum’s stunning works of art and exposing them to LACMA’s talented team.

Field Trips

The partnership included multiple field trips to the museum where LACMA staff led GenSpace members through exhibitions and offered insights about specific works of art.

In addition to the tour and tailored viewing, members also enjoyed lunch on LACMA’s campus and engaged in Q&A sessions with staff who offered their expertise about the pieces and their history.

Concerts

In addition to enjoying the art, part of the partnership includes LACMA’s ABC+ Ensemble, a group of talented musicians who provide intimate live performances around the city.

We hosted Strings in Harmony with the ABC+ Ensemble on the second floor of the Audrey Irmas Pavilion on the campus of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple. More than 90 GenSpace members attended the hour-long concert filled with enchanting melodies and lively rhythms performed by a dynamic string quartet of leading Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) musicians. The concert was part of LACMA’s Classical Around Town series.

Conversations on Aging

GenSpace team members spoke on LACMA’s panel entitled “Aging Creatively: Community Initiatives in Los Angeles.” The discussion focused on how aging impacts underserved communities and explored nationwide programs that connect older adults through arts, culture, and wellness.

The panel was sponsored by E.A. Michelson’s Vitality Arts Project, a grant focused on creative aging and anti-ageism.

GenSpace team members highlighted how the field trips and classes offered by LACMA enriched members’ experience and emphasized Wallis Annenberg’s vision to provide a creative outlet for the aging population in Los Angeles.

We’re excited to continue to foster and grow our partnership with LACMA as the museum continues to host classes at GenSpace, provide on-site art tours, and more. Stay tuned for new offerings.
